Pulsatrix perspicillata

Harry is a baby Spectacled Owl and is one of the latest additions to Turbary Woods.

Spectacled Owl, Pulsatrix perspicillata, is a large tropical owl. It is a resident breeder from southern Mexico and Trinidad south to southern Brazil, Paraguay and northwestern Argentina.

Description:

Brown upperparts, head and upper breast, white facial markings and buff underparts. The eyes are yellow and the bill is pale. Juvenile owls have the adult markings in reverse - a white head with black mask.

Habits: Generally nocturnal.
Size: Length 43-46cm (17-18")
Breeding: In an unlined tree cavity, laying two white eggs.
Hunting & Food: Spectacled Owls eat small mammals, insects and small birds.
Habitat: Mature dense tropical rainforests.
