It was nature red in tooth and claw at Larkholme Primary School, when the Turbary Woods Owl Rehabilitation Centre, Preston brought some of their birds to meet the KS1 and Reception classes.

The birds ranged from a tiny American Burrowing Owl called "Twiggy", to Checkers, the magnificent European Eagle Owl as well as Kissy the kestrel.

The children are concentrating on writing information texts at the moment but they really need to experience and understand these creatures before they can write about them. "There really is no substitute for personal experience" says Phase Leader, Helen Christie. " The chance to fly and hand feed and pet what is basically a wild creature has given them a much deeper understanding and empathy with their subject. They will remember this visit for the rest of their lives."

Visit organised by Margaret Carradus and copy supplied by H Christie
